This 1892 Federal Style courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 . Its restoration was completed in phases over 16 years. The work included a new slate roof, recreation of eight oval dormers and masonry restoration. Interior renovations included new heating, cooling and electrical systems, updated fire protection and state-of-the-art communications — all carefully integrated into the architecture. Interior spaces including a circuit court were rehabilitated and a new elevator was installed. Decorative painting was recreated in selected areas as well.
